Useful things get linked to on other websites and blogs and can greatly increase traffic over time.  Pick something in your field that you know a lot about – and may be complicated to many and boil it down to simple terms.  You will be surprised on your statistics to see how popular a well written how-to will be. 

A great tip for generating traffic is off-line by including your url in all your off-line literature from business cards, letterheads, pamphlets, adverts through in-store signage etc.  Always tell people that you have a blog, about your blog, and if applicable write about them in your blog.
